Commentary: No matter how many times I run in these super cold temperatures, I never feel like I get the hang on how to dress for them. I waffled back and forth the evening before, worrying about overheating and being too cold. I’m glad I decided to go for the ColdGear shirt under the jacket because I did end up running a fair bit slower (read: colder) than I typically run my long runs. Despite how cold and windy it was, I was quite comfortable once I got moving (not going to lie, that first 18 degree mile never gets any easier). I never felt like I was overheating, nor did I ever feel cold, except for when we stopped to Gu up before heading back. My fingers were a bit chilly at first, but again, once I got moving they were fine; unlike other runs, I never took them off this time. The only thing I would’ve changed was adding a lightweight pair of wind-blocking pants – my legs were half numb. I never “felt” the cold in my legs, but they were pretty red when I got back to the store to change.
